Stormed archipelago
Tropical storms, such as a tornado, are never something to sneeze at. They can leave miles of devastation in their wake and multiple lives can be lost when not prepared. But unlike most tornados, the one in Lou’s Lagoon never disappears as it is made by a fight between two mystical beings.
In Lou’s Lagoon, you play as the nephew/neice to Lou, the owner of Lou's delivery service, who has asked you to come to the Limbo Archipelago to help fix things up after the storm first hits said archipelago. Once you get there you can tell that this is not going to be an easy task, as multiple islands in the archipelago are in need of your help. But first, you need to fix up the delivery service and plane so you can actually help them.
To do this you will need to learn how to use your most useful tool, the Swirler. This is your main tool for collecting and delivering materials, but that is not all. Once Fidge, the tech who created the Swirler. is back at the delivery service, the Swirler can be upgraded to not just to be more powerful, but to do other tasks as well. These include building, scanning the ground for buried materials, using it as a glider to reach high cliffs or to go fishing for scales and yes I mean scales.
And don’t forget about your production machines as they are also crucial to your work here. Each one turns the items you grab on the islands into more usable materials for crafting and building. But some of the items you can craft will need different materials then you can get on the main island.
To get these different materials you will need to travel to the other islands. And the only way to get to them is your seaplane. To get to each island you need to fly there and the flying feels great. You can break, boost, and take sharp turns and all of those skills come in handy with the flying challenges you get later on to acquire new plane parts. But while you are out there flying you will need to watch out for the storm or it will throw you off course as it travels around the map.
There are three different islands that you can fly to in this archipelago. Tanglebloom, which has other islands you can get to, Boulderia, and Gleam Reef. Each island has its own set of people, resources, and chests for you to meet and collect. And the chests are useful; they can have trading cards to trade with certain characters for other items, shellings, which is the currency in the Limbo Archipelago, or zipper upgrades that expand your inventory.
Now flying to each island can take a fair bit of time but there is a better way of travelling. On each island there is a communication tower that has been damaged by the storm. Once it has been restored you can fast travel to it with ease, cutting down on your travel time considerably.
While traveling around the Limbo Archipelago there is one other task that you are trying to do and that is figure out where your Uncle Lou has run off to. This is the main plot of the game and where the meat of the content is. By following in Lou’s footsteps, you will slowly catch up to him and learn the lore to this beautiful place.
And beautiful is the right word to use as the visuals in Lou’s Lagoon are just that, with great audio to boot. Both of them help build the feeling of being on an island surrounded by nothing but water for miles. And to me it brings a certain air of peace while I play.
Now with all the good does come the bad as there were a few bugs that I came across while playing. On some occasions while I was flying around the water would disappear, not a major bug just a cosmetic one. The second one was worse as I completely lost one of my inventory spots half way through the story. No clue why but it was kind of hard not to notice it. In fact, I’ve reached out to the devs to see if this is something that can be fixed.
Lou's Lagoon was a fun and engaging crafting adventure that I had a lot of fun playing. Yes, there were a few hiccups here and there. but when dealing with the open sea and a magic storm, nothing will really be smooth flying.
