Theos: City of Myths

Building for gods

Throughout history, the people of Greece worshipped and paid tribute to many of their gods, those of which they would construct vast monuments and statues to, and build their cities around them. Each one is the God of their realm and these cities would then choose a God as its primary patron and protector. From Athens favoring Athena, to Argos and Samos worshipping Hera, the people adored their protectors, and built their very culture around them.

Theos: City of Myths is a simple town builder that anyone can pick up and play. The goal is easy; build a town that is worthy of your patron god. First, you will need to choose which mode to do this on. You can choose Adventure or Sandbox, each having a different way of play.

Sandbox is self-explanatory: you choose a place to build, pick a God, then get started. You will have everything unlocked at the start, so you can build your city how you see fit. The only limit is how many resources you have to build with, otherwise, you have a lot of freedom to explore and construct the Grecian city of your dreams.

Adventure mode is different as you follow the story of the town you choose. Unlike sandbox, your buildings are unlocked as you progress throughout the story. You are also locked to one God in this mode, so when you pick the town, the God is already selected alongside it.

There are six locations for Adventure mode and nine for Sandbox mode. So, there are a lot of choices to pick from so there is no shortage of fun to be had. Once you pick a mode and location it is time to learn how to build your town.

To start, you will need to build the sanctuary for your God. This is the main structure in your town, and the most useful. This is where you will build temples to your God, showing your favor to them. Not only are there God specific buildings that you can build, but these will also help boost your town.

However, at the start, it is only a basic structure that needs a lot of work to build up. To do that you will need people to do the hard labour. That said, you will need to not only build homes for them, but also the paths and supply lines to their homes to attract them. Not to mention, the products that they need to upgrade their homes.

To start recruiting people to tend to that labor, you'll build homes for them to move into, and the nice thing is all structures are built instantly so there is no waiting on buildings here or any types of cooldowns. If you have the materials, you can simply just build.

Once you have placed some homes, the next thing is to make sure you can distribute and make what they need. The way you make stuff is the same as in most city builders, build the needed buildings to make the product then store the products in warehouses. Then, you distribute the products to the houses, but the distribution is the part that is a bit different from most in this genre.

To get materials distributed to their homes, you'll need to make patrols from the distribution buildings themselves; this goes for service buildings as well. There needs to be a patrol set for them in order for your people to get those services. For most items you'll need to use an Agora to distribute them to their homes, so make sure these are in range of the resources they need to supply. Making sure your supply network is functioning well is a must to keep both your people and God happy.

However, there is one more thing you'll need to do to keep your town safe; build an army. As there is always fighting in both Humanity and Gods, having a strong and reliable to defend your city is crucial to your survival.

If you must defend from your enemies, you must hold out for a number of waves, and when you attack, your goal is to destroy their town center. Just make sure that as you upgrade your army you are supplying them with the goods and services they need too. A supplied army is a healthy army.

Now, while I was playing Theos; City of Myths, there was only one real bug I found. At one point while playing the game, my progression was halted as the game assumed I was still in Chapter One, when I was actually in Chapter Four. This stopped me building the essential structures needed to continue. I'm not sure why this happened, or what caused it, but loading an older save fixed it. While it could have really impacted my progress, it wasn't as game-breaking as I first assumed.

The visuals of Theos: City of Myths are simple but charming, certainly executing on the Greek aesthetic. The background is a clean design that looks very natural for the time, and the cartoony look of the people in your town compliments the animations they made for them. The sounds and ambience also contribute to making the world around you feel more vibrant and alive.

With all that said, Theos: City of Myths is an easy to pick up and play city builder that I had a great time with. This is one I would recommend to anyone looking to get into the genre with how simple and intuitive it really is. And if that person is you, why not try and see if you can build a Greek city that can stand up to both time and your God's wishes.
